BIO
ALAN PETITTI • RETROSPECTIVE
Alan Roy Petitti (born November 23, 1957) is an American musician and songwriter best known as the lead guitarist, keyboardist and founding member of the Boston- based Alternative rock band O Positive. Alan's pop sensibility and abstract approach to songwriting with all its uniquely simplistic complexities are what make his musical contributions such an important and distinct part of the sound of O Positive.
ā
In the early 80s, Alan began working on original music ideas in his basement studio in Brighton, MA. Good friend and drummer Alex Lob was interested in setting up a jam session with Alan, and suggested inviting mutual friend David Ingham to join in on bass. Alan wasn't exactly looking to jam, but the idea of working on his original music with other musicians piqued his curiosity. So he counter offered by inviting Alex and David to come down and play on some of his material.
Pleased with the initial results, Alan proposed getting together regularly to work on his originals. Also seeing the potential, Alex and David accepted the invitation, and the fledgling trio, lead by Alan on guitar and vocals, began establishing a repertoire of Alan's original material for which to build a potential band.
Not too far down the road, guitarist and vocalist Dave Herlihy, who happened to be on the outs with his own band Chapter 12 was invited into the mix. The recruitment of Dave Herlihy on lead vocals and guitar solidified the group which then became known as O Positive. With the addition of sound engineer and musician Dave Martin, O Positive grew to become one of Boston's most beloved Alternative rock bands of the 80s & 90s.
In the years since O Positive disbanded, Alan has reunited occasionally with the other former members Dave Herlihy, David Ingham, Dave Martin, and Ken Hickey to perform at benefit shows, memorial events, and special celebrations such as the Boston Music Awards, WBCN and WFNX farewell concerts.
With the exception of the O Positive reunion shows, Alan took a long hiatus from the Boston music scene in order to focus attention to his family, more specifically raising his son Spencer. One of Alan's greatest achievements and joyful moments as a musician and a father is when he shares the stage with Spencer who plays trumpet when O Positive reunites to perform live.
During his years after O Positive, Alan continued writing and recording music outside of the limelight without releasing any of his post-O Positive material to the public, until now that is. Most recently, with a little help from his friends and encouragement from his fans, the "Time" has come for Alan Petitti to get back to SQUARE ONE.

O Positive - "Overflow" (Herlihy, Petitti)

ā
Beginning in 1984, these five feverishly-creative Bostonians (two Als and three-count-'em-three Daves) gradually hoisted themselves to the top of the New England indie-rock heap. O Positive released two EPs and a compilation CD (the latter on Link Records, also the first U.S. home of the Godfathers), and scored a Top-10 college radio hit with "Talk About Love." Spring, 1990 launches ToyBoatToyBoatToyBoat, O Positive's Epic debut LP.
The album was recorded at White Crow Audio in Burlington, Vermont, and was produced by Peter Walsh (Love & Rockets, Peter Gabriel, Xymox). The results sound lush and full without losing the energetic sound that propels O Positive's live shows... [There are] some club-hungry dance tracks, some slow, quiet, pretty melodies, and some kick-butt rock and roll.
